Do’s and Don’ts When Using Butterfly Colouring Pencils

At Butterfly, we believe creativity should be limitless, and colouring pencils are a fantastic way to express yourself. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced artist, knowing the right techniques can make all the difference. Here are some essential do’s and don’ts for using coloured pencils effectively. Watch our video and follow along or read our article below for more tips!

✅ Do’s:

  1. Layer Colours for Depth
Start with light layers and gradually build up to create smooth transitions. This prevents harsh lines and allows for better blending.
  2. Blend with Different Techniques
Experiment with cross-hatching, circular strokes, or tissue blending for unique effects. Each technique adds a different texture to your artwork.
  3. Use the Right Paper
A thicker, textured paper holds colour better and allows for smoother shading. Thin paper might tear or become too waxy with layering.
  4. Keep Your Pencils Sharp
A fine tip is great for details, while a slightly blunt tip helps with smooth shading. Rotate your pencil while colouring to maintain an even point.
  5. Try Colour Mixing
Instead of relying only on the colours in your set, mix and layer different shades to create unique hues. Blending two colours can make artwork more dynamic!

❌ Don’ts:

  1. Don’t Stick to One Colour
Mixing and layering colours adds depth and interest to your artwork. Avoid flat, single-colour sections by adding highlights and shadows.
  2. Don’t Press Too Hard Too Soon
Heavy pressure can damage the paper and make blending difficult. Start light and build up gradually for a smooth effect.
  3. Don’t Use Cheap Erasers
Regular erasers may smudge or tear the paper. Use a kneaded eraser to lighten areas without ruining your work.
  4. Don’t Rush
Good colouring takes time! Enjoy the process and take breaks to prevent hand fatigue.
